What makes an heirloom last generations?

The care and attention you put into it.

Wood is dynamic and changes with its environment - just like you should.

Each product has a use that requires a different finish and specific care. Treating them right is the key to decades of enjoyment.

Kitchen Knives

Never EVER put your kitchen knife into the dishwasher. Heat and moisture will DESTROY anything but plastic and ceramics.

  • Set your knife aside after use. Avoid resting it in puddles of water and never let it soak in the sink.

  • Run the whole knife briefly through the faucet stream.

  • Wet your sponge in warm water and apply a small amount of dish soap to it.

  • Use the rougher side of the sponge on the steel blade to remove all food residue.

  • Use the softer side of the sponge on the wooden handle to gently wipe off all food particles and liquids.

  • Rinse all dish soap from the knife in warm water.

  • Dry the knife completely with a dish towel.

  • Return it to your knife block, magnetic rack, or drawer.

When storing your knives longer term, apply a thin coat of mineral oil to the blade to protect the steel from moisture in the air. Store out of sunlight to preserve the finish and keep the natural wood colors from bleaching or fading.

Charcuterie & cutting boards

Never EVER put your cutting & serving board into the dishwasher. Heat and moisture will DESTROY anything but plastic and ceramics.

  • Set your board aside after use, avoiding puddles of water on the counter. NEVER soak a wooden board.

  • Use warm water and a small amount of dish soap to scrub all food remains from the surface.

  • Rinse all soap suds from the board.

  • Immediately dry all surfaces and set board aside on a dish towel or leaning on an edge to air dry.

  • Reapply a mineral oil or cutting board conditioner after every 3-5 cleanings to keep your board from drying out.

Our cutting boards are perfect for resting and serving meat, but certain dishes with dark juice or sauces may stain the wood. Expect such staining from beets, red wine, curries (especially with tumeric), etc.

Paddles & Impact Toys

Paddles and mallets for spanking come in two finishes: glossy candy coat and hand rubbed oil.

Candy coat finishes will last for years before needing to be refinished if protected from drops and dings. A slow loss of shine is perfectly normal for regular use.

  • Body safe disinfecting wipes and adult toy cleansing sprays are perfect care treatments for our gloss coated impact toys.

Hand rubbed oil finished products have a softer, warmer glow and can be maintained with occasional applications of non-food oils and wax-oil mixtures.

  • Sanitize with a light adult toy cleansing spray or body safe sanitizing wipe.

  • Use a soft, lint-free cloth to dry and buff away any residual oil.

  • Apply a thin coating of the new oil to every surface, nook, and cranny of your impact toy.

  • Let rest at least two minutes.

  • Gently buff away excess with a clean, lint free cloth before storage.

Working tools

Maintaining working tools is a never-ending job. No amount of advice will keep your handles from cracking or your striking surfaces from becoming gouged. But. Caring for the wood will put off the day that it gives up.

All wooden elements on our axes and joiner’s mallets are finished with a penetrating-hardening oil like Danish oil, Teak oil, or Tung oil.

  • Gently sand wooden surfaces with fine grit sandpaper (220 grit or above).

  • Remove all dust with a clean, lint-free rag.

  • Finally:

    • A) Apply hardening oil according to directions if you have hours and days OR,

    • B) Hand rub a hard wax for wood (avoid auto waxes) for quicker care.
